Story

The Roggengratbad was first documented in 1783. Two years later, the governor of Trachselwald wrote in his official report on the baths: "In the Wyssbachgraben, belonging to the Eriswil district court, in the so-called Roggengrathbad, bathing is said to be occasionally practiced" (from "The Healing Baths in the Oberaargau and Lower Emmental").

Until 1869, the Roggengratbad had no commercial rights whatsoever. That year, it was granted for the winter months due to the many lumberjacks working in the area. From 1879 onward, it was permitted year-round. In 1930, the then owner replaced the six old wooden bathing tubs with three metal tubs. The bath was recommended as beneficial for rheumatism, rheumatic paralysis, and skin rashes. The last baths were heated in 1963.

Rösi and Walter Heiniger, known as "Bedli-Rösi and -Walter," were the long-serving innkeepers for the past 100 years. On August 20, 1975, they sold the business to Peter Herrmann of Wyssbach. In the following years, the building was renovated, and various tenants managed the renowned restaurant. On November 16, 2000, the Roggengratbad was nearly destroyed by a fire in the chimney. Reconstruction and extensive renovations took place the following year. The restaurant continued to operate until 2017, when the last tenant couple was forced to close the business in court for ignoring suppliers and owners, just as in Gotthelf's time. After that, the restaurant never reopened. After the long-time owner had also passed away, his wife finally decided to sell the property. In November 2023, the newly founded company BLUE-art Roggegratbad AG, a subsidiary of BAIN-BLEU S.A., which operates the thermal baths in Geneva and whose owners previously developed and operated a chain of thermal baths and hammam facilities throughout Switzerland, acquired the property. In October 2024, after receiving the building permit, the complete renovation began, meaning that a new chapter for Roggegratbad will be written starting in autumn 2025.
